Being truthful is a valuable character trait, but not necessarily in the game of chess. Whether it be playing online chess games or playing in person, baiting an opponent by placing one piece in the center of the board early on in a game of chess is a simple way of evaluating an opponent with a simplistic chess opening strategy; watching how they react to the lone piece is an indicator of what kind of player they are. If they immediately jump on the piece and act aggressive, then you definitely need to keep your eyes open; if they ignore the piece and act like it’s not important, then be on the lookout for serious flaws in their defense; they are probably inexperienced or just not a very perceptive player.

When an opponent presents a move such as this one, often times they are trying to see whether you take the bait or not; if you pounce on them and they withdraw the move, then you know immediately they are merely testing the waters; if they leave the piece where it lay, then they will probably continue to bring many pieces into play, hoping to confuse you.

Depending on your playing style, respond to the move. If you want to portray the image of a strong player, take the piece, if it is available and advantageous to you. If you want to portray the image of a sneaky, less direct attack, still respond but don’t be overly aggressive with your move; perhaps try a block instead of a take. This is only one avenue a player can take to help them learn how to win at the game of chess; basic chess rules regulate how and when pieces move, but not the motives behind those moves.
